On Thursday, March 8th, 2018 International Women's Strike (IWS) called women and their allies to strike from all labor, both paid and unpaid for one hour (4-5pm). and then join thousands striking, rallying and marching around the world.
The rally started 5PM at Washington Square Park in Manhattan, it featured speakers from IWS diverse and radical coalition, including feminist grass-roots organizations, worker centers, cooperatives, unions, immigrant rights groups, community-based organizations and socialist groups.
At 6PM we all Marched through downtown Manhattan, stopping at symbolic sites including the Stonewall, the Varick Street Immigration Court and Wendy's in solidarity with current and historic struggles.
"It has often been said a women’s strike is impossible, due to non-strike clauses, precarious labor conditions, and the vulnerability that a majority of women face in the paid workplace. This impossibility is further attributed to the fact that women are the ones that bear the blunt of social reproduction, or that kind of labor that makes all other labor possible. We are, for the most part, the ones that sustain communal life; look after the built environment; and take care of the sick, children, disabled and elderly.
We believe, in spite of these difficulties, a women's strike to be both possible and fundamental in this political moment. Therefore, we are pushing for an hour strike, relying on the power of simultaneity, to make our absence unavoidably felt at home, in communal spaces, and paid workplaces. We will be heard and our collective strength be known International Women's Strike." - International Women's Strike 2018.
